How to Take Care of You!

Wellness Topics

There you go again, always taking care of someone else – your children, your aging parents, a sick relative or friend, an out-of-work sibling. But, what have you done for you lately?

While it’s commendable to want to help others, charity begins at home they say. “At home” here means taking care of you, because if you don’t do that, you certainly can’t help any one else.

A holistic approach to taking care of yourself incorporates caring for your body, mind and spirit. Here are some suggestions for taking care of all three to help you be the best you can be!

• Taking care of yourself physically means getting enough rest, eating well balanced and nutritious meals three times a day, exercising on a regular basis, drinking plenty of water, giving up bad habits such as smoking or drinking too much alcohol or caffeine-laden drinks and avoiding all recreational drugs.

• Taking care of yourself mentally means engaging in activities that you find relaxing, such as a hobby, reading a good book, going to see a movie, joining a social club, getting a manicure or massage, doing a crossword puzzle, having lunch with or calling an old friend. These types of activities give you a much-needed lift and dissolve some of the day-to-day stress that bears down on you.

• Taking care of yourself spiritually means communicating with your Higher Power through prayer and meditation, reading the Bible, attending weekly religious services, participating in a 12-step program, meeting with a member of your clergy for spiritual guidance, thinking positive thoughts, having faith or hope in times of trouble, doing a good deed without letting anyone know you did it.

Taking care of your whole person is an important component of living a long, happy and prosperous life. When you let one part slide, you eventually suffer the consequences. Often, people feel that they can just take care of their bodies and they will be fine. Or, they ignore the spiritual and wonder why they are so miserable.

Chiropractic adjustments also help you to take care of you by eliminating some of the effects that stress and unhealthy living take on your body. This is the season where we are bombarded with many extra stressors as we prepare for the holidays. Make sure you remember to take care of you as well! We will be looking for you!

What is the purpose of pain?
Pain prompts many Corona del Mar folks to begin chiropractic care. But pain isn't the problem! Pain is just how your body alerts you that a limit has been reached (or exceeded), that something isn't working right and that some type of change is needed.
